PhotoCraft vs Photoshop: a free online alternative?
Need layers, photo edits or a quick PSD-to-PNG export without installing software? See when PhotoCraft fits and when to keep your Photoshop workflow.
Open editorMenu paths use the editor’s English labels. The website language and the editor language are separate settings.
Is this Photoshop online?
PhotoCraft is a separate open-source image editor. Use PhotoCraft is an independent website that runs its browser build, free and without an account. It is not an Adobe product and is not affiliated with Adobe or the upstream PhotoCraft maintainers.
If you searched for “free Photoshop online,” the useful question is which editing task you need. For Adobe Photoshop itself, use Adobe’s official web product and check its current access terms. Here, you are opening PhotoCraft, with its own capabilities and limits.
Compare browser access, desktop apps and saving
Choose by the task and the edition, not just the product name. PhotoCraft is open source under MIT / Apache-2.0; Photoshop is a separate Adobe product. The links in the table lead to official product information or our recorded browser check. This is a source-based overview, not a performance benchmark.
| Option | Access | Saving and verification scope |
|---|---|---|
| PhotoCraft in this browser | Free; no site account or installation. Local image and PSD editing. | Download your work. Our three-layer PSD reopened after Save As and exported to PNG. No document autosave or crash recovery; complex PSDs need separate checks. |
| PhotoCraft desktop | Free, open source. Official packages include Windows, macOS and Linux; choose the matching CPU architecture. | An installed application from the same upstream project. Installation and desktop file compatibility were not tested for this website guide. |
| Adobe’s web editing offer | Adobe currently offers free Firefly web edits powered by Photoshop. Check current access terms and limits. | Official web offer; desktop feature parity is not assumed. No hands-on Adobe comparison was performed here. |
| Adobe Photoshop desktop | Subscription product with a free trial. Check Adobe’s current plans for your region. | Adobe’s full desktop editor. Keep a validated Photoshop workflow when exact project compatibility is essential; test any migration on copies. |
For text, fonts, masks, smart objects, effects and plugins, compare copies of your own files in the edition you plan to use. Similar menus do not establish equivalent behavior. We have not benchmarked Photoshop or verified Adobe AI features against PhotoCraft. Review the PSD guide for the exact scope of our small-file test.
When PhotoCraft is worth trying
It is a practical candidate for opening a simple layered PSD, making a small image edit or exporting a visible composition to PNG. The familiar canvas, tools and Layers panel reduce the amount of new interface to learn if you already know a layer-based editor.
There is no installation or site account to create, and image editing happens on your device. The trade-off is that the browser must handle the document in memory and you must download your own backups. There is no automatic document recovery in this web build.
PhotoCraft vs Photopea: which should you try?
Photopea is a different browser editor, not another name for PhotoCraft. Its official documentation describes local editing, PSD saving and export to formats such as PNG and JPG. If Photopea already handles your documents reliably, keep that workflow while testing alternatives. PhotoCraft is worth trying when you want an open-source editor with published source code and desktop releases.
Use PhotoCraft hosts PhotoCraft; we are not affiliated with Photopea. Our hands-on check covers PhotoCraft’s three-layer practice PSD and PNG export, not a head-to-head compatibility test. Try the same copy of your own PSD in both editors, compare text, masks and layer effects, and reopen your saved file before switching. PhotoCraft’s browser build currently has no document autosave.
When to keep your existing Photoshop workflow
Keep the original application for work that depends on exact PSD round-tripping, particular plugins, linked resources or established color and print checks. Do not assume that similar-looking menus mean every command or file feature behaves identically.
Treat a switch as a file-by-file decision. Compare a representative document, make one reversible change, export it and inspect the result in your delivery workflow. A successful test with a simple image is not evidence that a complex client project will survive conversion unchanged.
Try a complete small task before deciding
Start with the first-edit guide or the PSD-to-PNG guide linked below. Download the practice PSD, hide one layer, undo and export PNG. Then try a copy of a file you actually use. You can judge the result, responsiveness and saving process with your own material.
Use PhotoCraft follows published stable releases of the upstream project. The version checked for this guide is shown above; a newer editor release does not automatically mean that every workflow described here has been retested.
